Protective creams or sunscreen work in two ways-they either reflect off the ultraviolet rays or they absorb the rays before they can do any damage.
Physical sunscreen
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
- Broad spectrum
- Visible, so cosmetically not acceptable
- No allergic reactions
Chemical sunscreens
- Benzophenones
- Cinnamates
- Not so broad spectrum (selective)
- Invisible, so cosmetically acceptable
- Allergic reactions can occur.
Calamine lotion and thick creams, such as zinc oxide cream, work in the first way; but for them to work, they need to be applied in a thick layer and so are generally not cosmetically acceptable. The absorbent type of sunscreens selectively absorb UVB, and some UVA. This category includes benzophenones and cinnamates because these are not visible, they are cosmetically acceptable and so are very popular. Para aminobenzoic acid is no longer used, because it causes allergic reactions.
Most of the times sunscreens are safe, but they cause dryness of skin.
Water is the natural moisturizer.
